Free software called Firesheep lets just about anyone sitting next to you at your local coffee shop watch you browse the Web and even assume your identity online. You’re safe if the sites you’re watching, or logged into are secure (https) sites. That’s not the norm, unfortunately. I have resorted to tethering my iPhone with a USB cable to my laptop and using the phone’s internet connection. It works surprisingly well. Maybe other smart phones can do this. If you’re using Firefox browser, you can download Blacksheep for free which can detect the presence of Firesheep on the network and give you a warning. Anyway, as they said back in the day on Hill Street Blues, be safe out there!
